Annual Meeting on Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering 2026

The Annual Meeting on Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering 2026, held on 8 May 2026 at the Alameda Campus of Instituto Superior Técnico, once again brought together students, faculty members, researchers and representatives from industry, reinforcing its role as a privileged forum for networking, knowledge sharing and strengthening links with companies in the sector.

The opening session featured addresses by José Manuel Marques, Coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in Energy and Earth Resources, Maria João Pereira, Head of the Department of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering, and Rogério Colaço, President of Técnico Lisboa. The speakers highlighted the strategic importance of the sector, underlining the key role of mineral and energy resources in the energy and digital transitions, the future of industry, and the development of technologically advanced, environmentally sustainable, socially responsible and economically viable solutions.

Throughout the day, students from the MSc in Geological and Mining Engineering, the MSc in Energy Resources Engineering, and the PhD in Energy and Earth Resources presented research work that showcased the diversity and scientific vitality of the field. The presentations covered topics such as underground hydrogen storage, geothermal systems, seismic inversion, sustainable mine planning, tailings characterization, mineral processing, ornamental stone, smart mining, remote sensing, mineralogical characterization and industrial strategy, reflecting the breadth of scientific and technological activity developed within the Department.

The work presented also highlighted the strong multidisciplinary nature of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering, as well as the growing alignment of research activities with the challenges of the energy transition, sustainability and sector digitalisation.

The programme also included invited talks from Galp, Sibelco, Strategist Solutions and The Reflective Edge, and the Sociedade de História Natural de Torres Vedras, who shared with students concrete challenges and perspectives from the sector in areas such as energy, smart mining, materials solutions and the valorisation of geological resources.

More than a showcase of academic work, the Annual Meeting affirmed itself as a moment of collective projection for the field, recognising students’ academic journeys and highlighting the Department’s capacity to train talent, produce applied knowledge and contribute qualified responses to the major technological, environmental and industrial challenges of today.
