Ciência nas Férias 2026: High School Students Experience Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering at Técnico

Between March 30 and April 2, Instituto Superior Técnico welcomed 28 high school students as part of the initiative “Science on Holidays – Easter 2026”, organized by the Department of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering.
Over four intensive days, participants had the opportunity to engage closely with the field of Mineral and Energy Resources Engineering through a dynamic mix of hands-on activities, laboratory work, field trips, and reflection on sustainability and innovation.
The program began with the students’ reception and an introduction to the topics under study, followed by an immersive experience using 3D glasses that allowed them to explore concepts interactively. The day also featured a mini-lecture by C5Lab on innovation in the cement industry and its role in climate action. Practical geology activities were also conducted, including the exploration of underground resources and understanding the origin of natural mineral waters.
On the second day, students visited Secil – Outão, where they had direct contact with the operations of a quarry and an industrial facility, gaining a concrete view of the processes involved in the extractive industry.
Laboratory activities marked the third day, with analysis and characterization of samples collected in the field. Students also participated in an interactive activity organized by Cluster Portugal Mineral Resources, highlighting the importance of mineral resources in everyday life. Environmental aspects were addressed with the contribution of Visa Consultores, emphasizing the challenges and best practices in landscape restoration and sustainable development.
The final day focused on data analysis and the application of Data Science concepts, culminating in the creation and presentation of a portfolio in a storytelling format. The “Create2Make” activity encouraged the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for the sector, promoting teamwork and creative thinking.
This initiative provided a rich and inspiring experience, allowing students to explore different aspects of engineering, develop practical skills, and reflect on the role of mineral resources in a more sustainable society.
