On March 7, the Department of Engineering and Resources (DER) held the 5th Earth Sciences and Engineering Meeting, under the theme “From Pixel to Planet: Exploring the Earth through Digital Data”, at Técnico – Alameda, in Lisbon.

Aimed at high school teachers, the initiative was part of a seminar series promoted by DER, designed to reflection, knowledge sharing, and technical-scientific debate on emerging topics in geosciences, energy, and sustainability.

The programme featured a series of presentations focused on the role of remote sensing and satellite imagery in understanding the planet. In the session “Pixels that Tell Stories: The Use of Satellite Images in Geosciences”, Ana Paula Falcão highlighted the potential of digital data to interpret natural phenomena on a global scale.

Lídia Quental presented various applications of remote sensing in geology, emphasizing its relevance for identifying and monitoring geological resources and processes.

In turn, Maria João Pereira, in the session “What Do Images of the Earth Tell Us?”, introduced participants to the fundamentals of remote sensing, exploring how different types of sensors and data can be used to analyze the Earth’s surface and support decision-making in scientific and environmental contexts.

The event brought together 24 teachers, who had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and explore new pedagogical approaches to using digital data in the analysis and understanding of the planet.

The activity was accredited with 3.5 hours of training by Novafoco – Training Centre, under Dispatch no. 5741/2015, of May 29.

With this initiative, DER reinforces its commitment to strengthening the link between higher education and secondary education, promoting the value of teaching in the fields of science, energy, and sustainability.
