Field Visit to the Campolide Site – Lisbon’s Major Drainage Infrastructure Project

On June 4th, 2025, students enrolled in the course units “Seminars in Mining and Energy Resources Engineering”, from the MEGM and MERE degree programmes, will have the opportunity to take part in a very special study visit.

The destination is the Campolide construction site, where works are currently underway as part of the General Drainage Plan for Lisbon — a large-scale infrastructure project, widely known as:

“The invisible work that is preparing the city for the future”

This ambitious project, with a completion horizon set for 2030, aims to prepare Lisbon for extreme rainfall events, significantly reducing the risk of urban flooding. Key actions include:

🔹 Reinforcement and rehabilitation of the sewage network
🔹 Construction of retention basins
🔹 Building of two major drainage tunnels:

  • Monsanto – Santa Apolónia Tunnel (TMSA)
  • Chelas – Beato Tunnel (TCB)

💡 A unique opportunity to witness first-hand how engineering is shaping the future of resilient and sustainable cities.
