Short Course on Life Cycle Assessment gathered 25 participants at Técnico

"Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the Context of Circular Economy and Sustainable Development"

📅 July 16–18 | 🕤 09:30–12:30 | 📍 Room 3.23, Pavilhão de Minas – Alameda Campus

Over three days, 25 participants — including students, researchers, and professionals from engineering, sustainability, and environmental sciences — gathered at Técnico to explore Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a key tool for sustainable development and the transition to a circular economy.

The course was led by Prof. Esperanza Batuecas, Associate Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and offered a balanced mix of theoretical learning and practical experience using the OpenLCA software.

📘 Topics covered

  • Introduction to Circular Economy and Sustainable Development
  • Fundamentals of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and related ISO standards
  • LCA methodologies and tools
  • Practical Case Study: LCA of a car battery using OpenLCA
  • Results interpretation and sensitivity analysis

Throughout the course, participants had the opportunity to build and run LCA models, identify environmental hotspots, explore different assumptions and scenarios, and reflect on the role of LCA in designing more sustainable products.

The short course concluded with an open discussion session, where key insights and recommendations were shared, highlighting the importance of LCA in supporting strategic decision-making for environmental improvement.

This course is another example of Técnico’s commitment to sustainability and advanced training on topics of global relevance.
